The youthband Göta Lejon has since the 60's enjoyed the inhabitants of Gothenburg by giving them music and entertainment in the streets and open places of the town. The band, in their characteristic blue and white uniforms, is a popular part of all great events in Gothenburg. At different inaugurations, parades, sports events, national celebrations, Chalmers-Cortegen etc, Göta Lejon has always been present. Ever since 1969 the band has diligent been applied to Liseberg and opens the Liseberg season with a big opening parade. The band plays also at business parties and private feasts. The repertoire comprises 70 melodies in a firm program of parade music and show elements which normally are part of such a band.
H I S T O R Y
the youthband Göta Lejon was founded in 1962 and
consisted of members out of different school bands. From
1967 until 1996 the band was conducted by Sven Olander
who also developed it into what it is today. He introduced
the figurative march and built up the great repertoire of
about 70 pieces of march and parade music. The first choreographer of the band was Sofia Sjölin. She
started as a dancer 1979 acted during many years as a
bandleader and has composed many of the dances that
today are part of the dance repertoire. She introduced the
flag troop that further strengthens the visual impression of
the band. The band has 60-80 performances every year.
At the World championship for marching show bands at
Potsdam in 2001 and at Monza 2003 Göta lejon reached
honorable places.
T H E B A N D
The youthband Göta Lejon has today about 100
members in the age of 11-21 years. The members get
their musical education and undergo training in instrumental
skills and the ability of acting together in a big
band.
In nearly 50 years has a community evolved called the "Göta Lejon spirit". It is signed with tolerance against
other people, different musical and choreographically
qualities. To be one of the members of the Göta Lejon
band is joyful, constructive, thrilling and interesting.
The income of the band comes from different commissions
pays the instruments, uniforms, rehearsal,
locals, sheets of music and other equipment. In
strengthening the economical basis, the band arranges
several markets and lotteries. The activity is a form
idealistic association where the members consist of
children and their parents but where anybody can
become a member.
T R A V E L L I N G
Through the past years the band has represented
Gothenburg and Sweden on the trips abroad carried
through every year. The countries of Scandinavia and most
countries in the rest of Europe have been visited. For
instance has the band at four different occasions played at
Vienna international juvenile music festivals.
Further travels trough out the years: Four to the United
States, many travels to France, twice to Disneyland near
Paris. Even Monte Carlo, the Vatican state, Sicily, Venice,
Monza, Salzburg, Bremen, Scarborough and others has
been visited by Göta Lejon.
